Descartes gave us the solitary thinking self. AI collaboration pushes us toward a harder question: what happens when meaningful thought increasingly emerges between people, tools, and shared context?

From 'I Think' to 'We Think': The Very Meaning of 'I Am' in the Age of AI

Descartes gave us one of the most durable sentences in philosophy:

I think, therefore I am.

It is hard to improve on a line that short.

The power of the idea is that it starts with doubt. Descartes imagined stripping away everything he could not trust: the body, the senses, the outside world, even the possibility that an evil demon was deceiving him. What remained was the fact that he was doubting. And if there was doubt, there had to be a doubter.

The thinking self survived the experiment.

But Descartes was working from a solitary model of intelligence. One person. One mind. One proof of being.

That is not how modern work feels anymore.

When I use AI to reason through a product decision, a strategy memo, or a technical problem, the most interesting ideas rarely arrive as a clean output from one side. They emerge through the exchange. I frame the issue. The AI reflects it back with a different structure. I reject part of that structure. It surfaces a contradiction I missed. I make the call.

Who did the thinking?

The honest answer is: not me alone.

Thinking Has Always Been Shared

The idea of the isolated mind was always a little misleading.

Human thinking has always depended on other people and external tools. Language lets us borrow categories from the culture around us. Books let us think with people who died centuries ago. Whiteboards make ideas visible enough to rearrange. Teams catch assumptions an individual would miss.

AI does not invent shared thinking. It makes shared thinking faster, stranger, and more explicit.

That is why the shift matters.

We are moving from tools that store thought to tools that participate in thought. Not conscious participation, and not moral agency, but active contribution inside the thinking process.

The question is not whether AI "thinks" in the human sense. That debate matters, but it is not the practical question for most teams.

The practical question is:

What happens to human work when useful thought can emerge from a relationship between people, AI systems, and shared context?

The New Shape of Cognition

The best AI collaboration does not feel like outsourcing.

Outsourcing is: "Do this for me."

Collaboration is: "Help me see this more clearly."

That distinction is important. When AI simply completes a task, the human remains outside the process. When AI helps structure the problem, challenge assumptions, and preserve the reasoning, the human becomes more engaged, not less.

I see this most clearly in strategy work.

A founder brings a messy question: "Is this the right wedge?"

A weak AI interaction turns that into a generic market analysis.

A stronger interaction does something more useful:

  • It separates customer pain from product ambition.
  • It identifies the assumptions hiding inside the question.
  • It compares the current wedge to the longer-term platform story.
  • It asks which proof would actually matter.
  • It helps turn the conversation into a decision brief.

The human still decides. But the thinking surface is larger.

From Private Intelligence To Shared Intelligence

Most personal AI tools still reinforce private intelligence.

One person asks. One thread responds. One output gets copied somewhere else.

That can be powerful, but it is not enough for teams. If the thinking remains private, the organization loses the context behind the output. The work may move faster, but the group learns less.

Shared intelligence is different.

It asks: what if the thinking environment itself could hold context? What if people and AI agents could work from the same room, same artifacts, same history, and same trust boundaries? What if the output preserved not only the answer, but the reasoning and unresolved questions around it?

That is where "I think" begins to become "we think."

Not because the individual disappears. Because the individual is working inside a richer cognitive environment.

The Risk: Losing The Doubt

Descartes's deepest contribution was not confidence. It was doubt.

That matters more in the AI era, not less.

AI can make weak ideas sound polished. It can produce fluent explanations for mistaken assumptions. It can give a team the feeling of progress before anyone has done the hard judgment work.

So the human role cannot be reduced to approval.

The human role is to keep the doubt alive:

  • Is this true?
  • What is missing?
  • Who is affected?
  • What are we assuming?
  • What would make this wrong?
  • What should not be delegated?

In a shared AI workspace, doubt should be part of the interface. The system should make room for challenge, disagreement, rejected alternatives, and visible uncertainty.

Otherwise, "we think" becomes dangerous. It turns into groupthink with better formatting.

What Stays Human

AI can help us reason. It can help us synthesize. It can help us remember. It can even surprise us.

But it does not carry human stakes.

It does not know what it means to disappoint a customer, protect a team, keep a promise, or live with the consequences of a decision. It can model those concerns, but it does not inhabit them.

That is why human agency remains central.

The goal is not to dissolve the "I" into the machine. The goal is to give the "I" a better environment for thinking with others.

The best future is not solitary intelligence replaced by machine intelligence. It is human judgment strengthened by shared context, durable memory, and AI participation that remains bounded by human values and accountability.

A New Cogito

Maybe the old formula still holds.

I think, therefore I am.

But for modern work, it may no longer be enough.

We also need:

We think, therefore we understand more than any one of us could hold alone.

That does not erase the individual. It makes the individual more capable.

Descartes went looking for certainty by isolating the thinking self. The next era of AI collaboration may teach us something complementary: that some of our best thinking happens in the space between minds, tools, artifacts, and shared context.

The question is not whether AI makes us less human.

The question is whether we can design these systems so they help us become more deliberate, more honest, and more capable together.
